This particular pest is pretty nasty to look at. It's eight legs, two pincers, poison-barbed tail, and it's beady spider-like eyes make this arachnid the stuff of nightmares. They can live for years in hot climates. But when the weather turns colder, that is when they seek warmer places, like your home. Although they look like they have unyielding armor, scorpions can actually squeeze through places as wide as a paperclip! If you find one of these creatures, call a professional! Their sting can cause nausea, vomiting, numbness, convulsions, and trouble breathing. They typically won't attack you unless they are provoked, so just leave them alone. Let PCLV take care of them. These guys feed on spiders, insects, crickets, roaches, and even other scorpions. They like to nest under logs, rocks, discarded garbage, old lumber, and will even live on trees, under bushes, and behind walls. Because they live in the desert they, like all of us, are always on the lookout for water. This is why you will often find them sunning themselves by pools. If you find them inside, there favorite hiding places include your bathroom, closets, shoes, folded bedding...anyplace dark and warm. So, if you've even found a scorpion in your house, check your shoes before putting them on. But don't worry, they have rarely killed anyone in the U.S. (only 4 deaths in the last 11 years) so you're chances of getting seriously injured are very slim. |
