The Black Widow
Color: Black with a red "hourglass" mark or brown with yellow marks on abdomen
Size: ~1/2 - 1.5 inches long with leg's spread
They get their name from the fact that the female will kill the male after mating with it. Females produce anywhere from 4 to 9 egg sacs each summer. Each sack contains 300-400 babies that take just over a week to hatch. One of the most venemous spiders in the U.S., but rarely fatal if treated.

The Desert Recluse
Color: light brown legs w/dark brown to yellow body. Violin-shaped spot on body
Size: 1/2 inch plus 1.5 - 2 inch leg span
Named because of it's reclusive nature, these spiders like to stay hidden in dark, small spaces like dead plants or under rocks. They won't attack unless provoked. If bitten, intense pain and redness will occur. A "necrotoxin" (poison that kills healthy cells) will cause the skin to blister and eventually burst, creating an ulcer, if not treated promptly. The bite could prove fatal for children and elderly. Do not attempt to kill this spider on your own. Call a professional!
